Biography
Madeleine Thorn is an abstract painter in the final year of a Fine Art Painting and Drawing degree at the University of Northampton. Her practice explores the threshold between perception and consciousness, seeking to embody the shifting, fluid qualities of natural environments. Working with oil on canvas, she uses intuitive mark-making to create immersive, emotionally resonant spaces. Her work centres on the tension between control and release, allowing forms to arise through process rather than fixed intention.
Statement
My practice explores the threshold between perception and consciousness, seeking to embody the ephemeral experience of natural environments. I am drawn to the transient qualities of shallow, fluid spaces such as rivers and creeks, where light, movement, and reflection exist in continual change. These unstable environments dissolve boundaries between surface and depth, presence and absence; here, painting functions not as documentation, but as an act of remembering and surrendering.
Informed by modernist and contemporary painting, my work draws on artists such as Joan Mitchell, Cy Twombly, and Brendan Stuart Burns, particularly their explorations of nature, gesture, and the subconscious. This is further shaped by Heraclitus’ philosophy of perpetual change and impermanence. Working through sensation and subconscious impulse, I construct psychological landscapes that merge internal and external experience.
Through expansive, bodily gesture, forms oscillate between abstraction and subtle suggestion, hovering at the edge of recognition where memory briefly gathers before dissolving again. Meaning remains unstable, continually forming and undoing itself, mirroring the shifting nature of perception. Resisting resolution, the paintings invite prolonged reflection and embodied awareness, holding space between remembering and letting go, where experience can only be encountered in fragments through time and change.
